25 years by Hailey Coleman on Grooveshark

Today I turn 25.

As a birthday gift to myself, I put a playlist of some of the top songs between 1987-2012. I find the emotions and memories that songs create fascinating. While putting the list together I relived some wonderful (and not so wonderful) memories. Every song has made me think of a person, place or period of my life. I remembered choreographing a dance to Jock Jams on my friend’s driveway when we were in grade school, singing “Wonderwall” on the beach in Italy while on exchange with a number of other international students and standing on my couch signing “I will always love you” at the top of my lungs - just like Whitney Houston.

I’m so happy for all the memories that have come back. I’m so grateful for all the amazing people who have come in my life, whether for a brief moment or for years. I love my life and who I’ve become. I look forward to getting older and continuing the journey of life.

Flaunt Ambition

I was asked to speak at the Q WIL (Queen’s Women in Leadership) conference this weekend. I came home yesterday feeling so inspired by the other amazing speakers (Deborah Yedlin and Michelle Magnan) and incredibly talented students at the conference who were all flaunting ambition.

The main discussion points:

Follow your passions.
Do what makes you happy.
Gain as much experience as possible.

My takeaways from the conference.

Find a supportive spouse. In all relationships communication is key, so communicate. Take time for yourself, travel as a family, travel sans children and go on dates. Most importantly, stay connected when your kids are young. (Apparently I’m getting older considering this takeaway…)
Develop self awareness. Self Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. It allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. Having self awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking you. It also allows you to see the controls of your emotions, behavior, and personality so you can make changes you want.
Define your personal brand and style. This has been on my mind of a while…what is my personal style? Inspired by the style presentation by Brooks Brothers, I think I’ve finally figured out what I want my personal style to be…Classic. Chic. Timeless. Happiness! Now I just have to build my wardrobe.

You always hear of values and values based decisions, but I don’t think we generally give ourselves the time to think about what we truly value. I was inspired by Zappos and Stephen Shedletzky to put mine down on paper…

I believe that we do everything in the pursuit of happiness, so here are Damn Heels’ values for happiness.

1. Do what you love.
2. Continuously learn & grow.
3. Enjoy the process.
4. Surround yourself with amazing people.
5. Drive change through impact.
6. Build open, honest relationships with communication.
7. Do more with less.
8. Be humble.
9. Be positive, creative & open-minded.
10. Be comfortable & authentic.

Last week I dealt with fear and doubt. We often ask ourselves questions that elicit negative questions like, “What happens if I fail?” without even noticing it. Try changing the question around to, “What happens if I succeed?” Both are talking about success but the second questions elicits a positive answer.

Fabulous NY.

I flew down to New York last week to attend the Coterie fashion trade show which was amazing. It made me so happy to see other rock star Canadian brands like Ela handbags and TKEES there too.

I stayed with a girlfriend at her beautiful Tribeca apartment which overlooked the Hudson River and the new World Trade Center. Every morning before heading to the show, I went for a gorgeous run along the Hudson - the run, the water, the fresh air and seeing the Statue of Liberty in the distance made me so feel so alive!

I didn’t get to see much of NY while attending the show, but luckily for me, my man surprised me and we spent a fabulously romatic weekend in the city. We went to see the Lion King on Broadway (something I’ve been wanting to see since I was a kid), ran through Central Park, brunched at Sarabeth’s, strolled Greenwich Village and Soho, ate one of the most delicious meals at Balthazar’s, laughed our heads off at the Comedy Cellar (I literally thought my head was going to explode), and were in awe by all the wonders at the Museum of Natural History.

Best of all, my Damn Heels were the perfect companion. Life is beautiful.

This morning, my Hourglass Workout was a Dancehall class and it was f*ing AWESOME! The instructor started the class off by saying, “I’m going to show you moves your boyfriends are going to love.” Talk about stepping outside of your comfort zone. HA! I’ve never felt like such white bread with no rhythm before, but I gave every booty shake all I had on the d-floor. Watch out Beyonce!

I’m super excited for this week. I’m going to learn how to paddle board tonight with some other amazing women business owners. I have a few appointments booked to show Damn Heels’ holiday and spring/summer collections and TT Blues’ fall/winter collection. I’m off to NY for the Coterie & Sole show on Wednesday, and then I’m going on a surprise trip with my beau this weekend (biggest smile ever)!
